Welcome to 52Winters
Insights into polar and alpine environments
Taking in the view of peaks in the distance and miles of snow-covered pine trees before heading down the slopes. Making snow angels and sledding in the local park. Ice skating to the sounds of holiday music at the outdoor rink. The thunderous groaning of glaciers moving and shifting in the valley. Or setting up an overnight camp on a glacier under the night sky.
Whether in my neighborhood or out in the remote wilderness, I love the experience of winter. The snow and ice that layers the land creates a space for stillness, especially on the slopes where I can pause to admire the beauty of the land. I find myself more playful in winter, eager to jump into challenging activities such as snowboarding, skating, and snowshoeing - and many more I have not yet tried! And I approach each winter season with a reverence knowing we may lose this precious environment due to rising global temperatures.
I want more than a few months out of the year to enjoy winter. Since there are 52 weeks in the year, I created 52Winters to write about winter and cold climates all year round.
About me
My official resume will tell you that I have a background in technology marketing. But behind the professional polish lies my spirited independence fueled by curiosity and determination. I started young in high school studying Latin and French, playing sports and working at the local mall. I’ve had brief stints as a DJ, nightclub bouncer and film festival coordinator for no reason other than “just because.” But it was my time in New York City where I learned to focus on a path which opened many doors. I built valuable skills in digital marketing, content development, public relations, data analytics and branding. And I was introduced to the outdoors where I gained confidence and acceptance into welcoming communities. Now I’m looking to build a new path, one where I can apply all I’ve learned in order to have a positive impact on the environment and on my community.
About 52Winters
With 52Winters, I want to bring my marketing and communications background into polar and alpine environments. These regions are the coldest and most vulnerable to a warming climate; its stories need to be heard, need to be shared. I want to get involved in some way but there’s so much to learn and understand. And starting a new project - especially in the middle of a pandemic where we can’t travel or physically meet each other - adds another layer of twists and turns. As I get started, my goals are to:
Find my voice in this field
Build a network of polar and alpine professionals
Use modern digital tools to create compelling content
And to do this, I’m launching a blog covering topics such as science, adventure, conservation, tourism, sport, culture and media. I’ll write and share what I learn from blogs, videos and podcasts published by outdoor brands, nonprofits, research institutions, government agencies and many more.
About you
I’m hoping to connect with other winter-lovers through 52Winters. Many of us enjoy winter sports and traditions but are feeling the effects of a warming climate. Social media has helped me find scientists, researchers and nonprofits dedicated to climate research and solutions. Through their accounts, I’m learning a lot about what can be done to help protect cold climates.
